Stories Introduction:

Straight forward fiction writing is something that’s changed so much in recent years. Where people once only read stories from a book or magazine, there are now so many different ways to get a few thousand words of fiction in front of a willing reader. This makes the writer’s job at once easier (so many more publishers with web pages, online supplements, eBooks, etc.) and considerably more difficult (the sheer number of high quality competitors).

Still, most fiction begins with a short story, so this is an aspect of writing I’ve striven to become proficient at. When working with a comic artist or a videogame development team, I’ve found it incredibly beneficial to begin with a short story, regardless of the medium we’re ultimately working with. This way, the other people involved can also get a feeling for (and contribute to) the narrative, pace and style of a story – something which can be a lot trickier to determine from a formatted script.
